RE: (ASCEND) CSM-V3 (fwd)

But will they have time. Lucent and Ascend have both said they expect the
merger to be complete by June 30th. Meanwhile Lucent has the 16000 series
DSP which can support multiple sessions - modem, voice, or fax, has memory
onboard (no more DSPs with memory alongside), and isn't much larger than
there 1600 series (ie, a lot smaller than Rockwell's chips). And they use
less power. <URL:http://www.lucent.com/micro/dsp16000/> I'm given to
understand these are in process for the 2nd generation PM-4 cards.

I also suspect *Lucent* wouldn't be gung-ho about supporting *Rockwell* in
the DSP market. Presuming the MAXen survive the fallout I personally expect
them to start sporting Lucent DSPs before long. Ascend is easily Rockwell's
largest customer for server side chipsets - taking that away would be a blow
to Rockwell's marketshare, and a huge boost to Lucent's. And capturing more
of the server market means more leverage on the client side.
