(ASCEND) GSM Capable of 28.8K?

Hi all, 

Firstly, No I don't have anything better on a Saturday night to do,

Secondly, while testing a new Radius server I found myself short of a
computer with a modem to test it out, so I pulled out the trusty Nokia
9000i and dialed in, I expected the old 9600 Tx/Rx but instead found this

Well I didn't believe it either so I tried it on our other Max unit and the
same.

So I checked the STOP record just to make sure of what I was seeing and
there it was. Mobile caller ID(Optus to!) with connect speeds of what I had
seen.

So I gave it the final test by using as a modem on a computer and
downloading a file, the computer responded by saying connected at 9600 and
confirmed this when I tried to download a file.

Now can someone can explain this cause I'd love to know what's going on (No
didn't just change the speeds for this email, I do have better things to do
on a Saturday night than that :)
