Yes. If you used v.110 from the GSM phone, you would have seen a 9,600
connection - only if your Ascend was capable of that though - but since
you are most likely making a normal "data call", what actually happens
is that your call hits a bank of modems at Optus, which then in turn
make an outgoing cvall to the PSTN to the Ascend. These modems are
usually rack mountable versions of old consumer favorites, and the
most common (read cheapest) are v.34 at least. Hence the 28,800
connect.
