I must admit that since the acquisition of Ascend by lucent, 
things have pretty much gone to pot there...
Having said that, in the time that I've used ascend hardware
(specifically MAX 4000 series and Pipeline 130s) I've had
absolutely ZERO problems with the max 4000 running OS version
feik.m40 7.0.1 .. even with OSPF.  The pipeline 130s, on the
other hand, are real pieces of sh*t and after having to take
a P130 offline and put it in the freezer to cool down to stop
it rebooting itself every 60 seconds, I trashed them and got
cisco 2610s instead.

The MAXs for terminal servers I have never had a problem with.
all three maxes running feik.m40 7.0.1 with and OSPF have 
an uptime of 313 days currently and continue to run fine.

Personally, I would only use the max's as terminal servers
or access concentrators anyway.  Ciscos for routing, and 
foundry networks for gigabit switching and layer4-7 switching.
