A long pause can be due to a slow hunt group at the telco.

Solid tone is ISDN, caused if the ascend cant find a modem it considers
available (theoretically anyways, I had this happen for no particular
reason I could pin point on anything higher that os 6.1.7 ro I run 6.1.7)
