Netrek makes a few attempts to contact the client at last known IP
address.  A save is done of the "character" every death, but in Netrek's
case death is a necessary part of playing the game.

I agree.  Make crossfire disconnection painful, just like death, and
people will rapidly act to fix the problems they are experiencing.  Make
it identical in behaviour to death, perhaps?
