linux temperature monitoring

My bios displays the cpu and case temperature. Is there a way to get linux
to read these temperatures? 

I'd like to cron a script that will send an e-mail and then shutdown the
computer if the temperature is above some number. Does anyone have a
script for this or ideas on how to write one / best language to use?
