There are three books that I think should be mandatory purchases for any
newcomer to Linux.  All are O'Reilly, and two have been mentioned: 
Nutshell and Running Linux.  The third, would be "Learning the bash
shell."  Armed with these three, half a brain, and a little willpower,
you should be able have the tiger by the tail.

You'll also have a pretty good combination of tutorial / background and
ready reference.  You really need some of both to conquer any given
learning curve, but that's just my opinion.
