IRC at irc.umn.edu revisited...

I wrote a message to the U asking for help regarding my inability to connect
to irc.umn.edu, and this is the answer I got....

=====
Many services offered by the University are restricted to University IP
addresses only. No non-University addresses are allowed. Services such
as access to the news server and irc server can only be accessed from
valid University addresses.

We do allow telnet from non-umn.edu addresses, however those addresses MUST
be registered in the Domain Name Service. For security reasons, we have
configured our systems to look up the IP address of the user that is
attempting telnet access. The system then tries to determine the
corresponding DNS name of the user's IP address. If there is no
corresponding name, the connection is denied. You should talk to your
internet service provider to determine why the address isn't registered
in the DNS. It is also possible that the address was just created, and
had not yet made it into the DNS, in which case you should try again later.

Thus if you do not have a valid U of M IP address or if you are "spoofing"
any
domain names, then you will not be able to access some services. You may
want to talk to your service provider about this, use the University
modem pool, or make some other arrangements.

Well, it appears that one must have a valid U of M IP addy to connect to
that server...
