Remember that if your serial port UARTs are not 16550A or compatible, you
will have a slight advantage with an internal modem.  The internal modems
provide their own UART. 

But this is not a configuration issue, it has to do with the rate at which
the modem communicates with the PC through the serial port.  The 8550
UART, for example, is not capable of 115,200 or 57,600 compressed.
