Sound help requested

I seem to be one of the first people getting linux running on the ThinkPad
750 (old beater 33MHz 486), so no one has any info on getting sound to
work.

The machine has a Crystal Semi (www.crystal.com) CS4231, which should work
with the CS423x driver in Red Hat's sndconfig, but no luck so far.

IBM allows four settings of the I/O address, and none of those are on
sndconfig's list. In addition, there is no MPU on this device.

Should I skip sndconfig? What is my next step? Get out the source files?
