If DSL is available, get it.  I have had MediaOne service for almost a year
now, and I have been without service countless days.  Something always seems
to be broken, and no one has the slightest idea how to fix it.  The e-mail
server was so bogged down last week, I had to get up at 6:00 am to check my
e-mail, after 6:00 pm when I got home from work it was too slow to send me
even one of my e-mails, it told me how many I had, but that was as far as it
got...  Their service dies fairly frequently as well, and you have no
alternate numbers or anything to try, you're just sol.

We have had DSL at work for a while now (uswest line+uswest.net), and I can
only remember it going down twice, and that was maybe 3 hours max.  Also,
with DSL, you're not tying up another line like you would be with cable
service.  And if you play many network games, I get much better response
with the DSL at work than I do with my cable modem at home.  In quake, dsl
pings are around 50-60ms and my cable is 160-200ms...

If DSL was available in my area, I would get it over this cable in a
heartbeat...

I have DSL.

My config:
256K from US West; 1 static IP from MR.net, my ISP. (I believe US West
"lets" you have any number of 10.x.x.x addresses on your network. My
linux box actually has an IP address on the internet. This is very
convenient -- if, for example, I need to get to my server (for data or
applications) when I'm at work *cough*resume!*cough*, then it's really
easy.) I IP masquerade all my other workstations behind the one server.

The peak speed into and out of my house averages ~ 24K/sec, though I've
seen higher. Once all the ipchains firewalling stuff is added, it is
still quite fast, comparable to corporate speeds, with my wife and me on
at the same time doing web, ftp, mail....

The advantage to DSL, in my opinion is that it's two way: I can be a
server (http, ftp...) for anyone I want on the net, (as long as I
configure it properly, so I don't unwittingly end up being a server).
The speed up is about the same speed down.

One BAD thing about DSL is "DSL storms." There is so much (bogus)
traffic coming across my DSL router that my speed gets into the "bytes
per second" range.
