Look at the newt library.  The Redhat installation and setup 
program is one that uses it. It provides widgets on an ascii
terminal.

It should be already installed on your machine. It comes on your redhat 
CD. On my 6.0 CD it is there as
newt-0.40-9
newt-devel-0.40-9  

Once you install the devel package the documentation is provided in
/usr/doc/newt-devel-0.40/
