Whenever I hear about problems with a Virge card, I always recommend trying out
the vanilla XF86_SVGA X server (I know that some people can't get their Virge
cards to work with that at all, though..)  The XF86_S3V X server has some pretty
nasty problems.  If you can get the SVGA server to work at all, it will usually
work better than the S3V server.
