make install does what

I just installed a program (x11amp) with ./configure make make install. It
works fine. When I want to upgrade it (it is alpha) what should I do?
Should I delete everything make install put on my computer and if so is
there a list somewhere (can I just do locate x11amp, or are there other
files)? Or can I just rerun make and make install with a new version (or
an rpm) and assume it will overwrite the old files and not leave
unnecessary ones?

Thanks,

Ben
