Run, don't walk, to the nearest Barnes & Noble, or other bookstore and get
yourself a good Linux reference book. Amazon.com is also a good choice. My
personal favorite is Running Linux by Welsh and Kaufman. It's a little
dated, but 99% of the book is pertinent to even the newest kernels. It was
the first Linux book I read. Even though I understood relatively little of
it the first time through, it gave me enough info to get started. Now as I
go back to it periodically, I find all kinds of other info that I had
missed the first time.
Of course, don't ignore the many HOWTOs available. I don't have the URL
handy, but a short search with Google or some other search engine will
turn them up quickly.
