    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ == usually a cable problem.  Are you
trying to connect the two computers directly to eachother or are you
going through an ethernet hub?  If you're connecting NIC to NIC, you
will need to use a crossover ethernet cable.  If you're connecting NIC
to hub and hub to NIC, you will need two striaght-through cables.

Straight-through (both ends)

1: WO, 2: O, 3: WG, 4: Bl, 5: WBl, 6: G, 7: WBr, 8: Br

Cross-over (one end as straight-through, one end as follows)

1: WG, 2: G, 3: WO, 4: Br, 5: WBr, 6: O, 7: WBl, 8: Bl

where W = white, O = orange, G = green, Bl = blue, and Br = Brown.
