"Annihilating" a program from a window manager doesn't actually kill the
process, I think it just disconnects that program from the X server. 
The problem is that Eterm is (probably) not correctly handling the
disconnection.

I presume that if you type in 'exit' at the prompt, rather than closing
the window, the process will close properly.

I have had a lot of trouble with processes staying around when I close
windows, so it's just a habit of mine to go in and type in 'exit'
repeatedly until the window goes away (I say 'repeatedly', because I'm
often logged into another box and then su-ed or sometimes logged into
another box from there ;-)

Of course, in my experience, Netscape usually correctly handles the
'Close' signal, unless it's hung..  (of course, I apparently have really
good luck with Netscape, save for the fact that I have to disable
Java..)
