Modem dial-up methods...

My Linux server performs IP masquerading for the other computers on my SOHO
network. Normally, since the computer is right behind my main workstation, I
just spin my chair around and use kppp to dial up the modem (I don't like
dial-on-demand, for several reasons).

If I am in another room and too lazy to get to the server, I pull up a
telnet session and run a box-stock RedHat 5.2 "/sbin/ifup ppp0" script.

Ordinarily, this works fine, but for some reason I've noticed that I seem to
get *slightly* better performance out of kppp. It never really bothered me
so I never looked into the modem options.

I've been working on getting a friend's computer (a Compaq Presario) working
and I had to go to the Compaq site to download drivers. For some really
strange reason, the Compaq site ONLY works when I dial through kppp! Using
the ifup script through telnet, the browser says "site found..." and then
hangs until it times-out.

I don't remember seeing a modem option for "use this to block Compaq.com".
What could be causing this? This may explain my perception of occasional
slowness throught the ifup script if it is happening to other sites, but the
Compaq site is the only one I've noticed not to work at all.

Any ideas?
