Re: [TCLUG:20443] Networking

Tried pinging the linux box from the other machines? If you can't access
the linux machine via samba, it's most likely because samba is running
from inetd. With that configuration, it ususally won't show up in the
Network Neighborhood. Start > Find > Computername will turn it up, or if
you punch in \\computername into your explorer bar (win95 & winNT w/ IE4
desktop update and win98)

Also, if you're using public cable modem IP's for the above setup,
you'll most likely have to set up IP aliasing on all the machines so you
have both a private network and a public network. (There is a wierd
registry hack to get 9X to do ip aliasing. Don't have it handy
though...will find.)

If you are using the cable modem public IPs, try start > find > computer
and punch in an ip there.

A common internal only network setup looks like this:
IP: 192.168.1.XXX
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Network: 192.168.1.0
Brodcast: 192.168.1.255

Not defining a gateway is the best way to not confuse your public
interface.
