apache proxy and squid

I was using squid, but found that it didn't really help much. When I hit
back button on a browser it would redownload all the data and images under
squid. I switched to apache's proxy module and found that it felt much
faster. Do other people have similar experiences? I used the default squid
configuration for a dialup account -- could it have been misconfigured.
Also, can I do pam authorization with squid?
