I think I fixed it.  When I configured the domain name on disk I did so with
linuxconf.  I said that eth0 was disk.mn.mtu.net and eth1 was eggplant.mtu.net
and that the primary name was eggplant, assuming that to be short for
eggplant.mtu.net, not so.  Linuxconf decided to take eggplant and add it to my
primary search domain, mn.mtu.net, and set the hostname to that.  So once I
disk 'hostname disk.mn.mtu.net' and restarted some daemons mail started
getting through.  Thank you all for your help, I'm hoping I don't have any
more problems like this.
