Depends on what you want to do. I don't plan on upgrading my oc'd K6 233
for another year, at least. Hopefully longer. I have a friend who is happy
with his 486 running some kind of ancient Slackware with a v1 kernel. He
did upgrade from 16 to 24MB RAM, though.

He runs applications he wrote for SWARM, GRASS, and Netscape 3. He thinks
it's just great.

It's all about perception. Yes, his stuff would go way faster on a new
machine, but he perceives what he has to be enough. Who profits from
shifts in perception--us or chipmakers?

Please note that I am not talking about the reality of PIIIs being faster
than 486s. I'm talking about people's perceptions of performance.
