Re: [TCLUG:13783] Back again

again? okay....

I wouldn't mind having $ prompts if I'd chosen to have them. but I want
pretty graphics, damn it!
Okay. It's a Toshiba Satellite 2515 CDS. The OS (that I installed; whee!)
is RH 6.1. The video chip is a Chips & Tech 69000 with 2 MB RAM. This
chip is supported under XFree86 3.3.3. I've got 3.3.5, so it should be
okay. Here's what happens:
I run xf86config. choose a P/S2 mouse. choose the keyboard. choose the
chip. choose the monitor. write the file. type startx. Screen strobes
wildly for about a second then kicks me back to the $ prompt.
Fatal server error: no valid modes found, it says.
I have *no* idea what this is stemming from. The screen flicker makes me
wonder if it's a resolution thing? And, though I hate to say it, the chip
worked under Windows.... However, there's at least one page on the web
that describes this guy installing RH 5.something on THE EXACT SAME MODEL
and it worked. And yes, I tried using his settings. Same thing.
I've tried various monitor resolutions, I've tried setting it to a standard
VGA driver, I've tried configuring it as root. I've pretty much exhausted
my store of ideas, which wasn't very big, given that I'm new to this system.
So I'm begging, here. Please, help me. *gets down on her knees*
