IDE tweaking for Linux

I seem to recall somewhere that someone said the default way
Linux handles IDE drives is fairly sub-optimal for most modern IDE
drives.

How do I tweak the kernel to start using some of the more
advanced features of IDE such as bus mastering DMA?

Thanks,
