Beware when you use hdparm, though.  I've had it cause big problems. 
One time, I had just downloaded the RedHat 6.1 iso and wanted to burn it
onto a CD.  It turned out that my hdparm settings screwed up a
partition-to-partition move operation by flipping a bit here and there. 
I ended up downloading the whole iso again.

Then again, maybe my whole IDE subsystem is screwed up...
