I'd be into it, in a somewhat reserved way.  I got an old 386 laptop from
the illustrious Chris P., and my efforts to make it run Linux have led
into trying to compile old 1.2.x kernels -- basically reinventing the same
wheel you are, on a limited scale.  (I'm not doing much in the way of
networking / peripherals.)  It sounds like we could share some info
perhaps, and that's "a good thing," right?
