Katie, pay no attention to those SuSE users.  They'll regret in 
twenty years when they've ruined their back because of all the
heavy lifting required to carry around the "mammoth stack o'
SuSE CDs".

Download Slackware 7.0 - it's got all the stuff that you need.  And,
if it happens to be missing something that you'll actually use, well,
then it's just a matter of rubbing two sticks together and getting
some well-behaved 1s and 0s.
