There is a Gnome daemon-ish program called 'magicdev' that is
continuously scanning the CD-ROM drive (it's supposed to handle
auto-insert notification, so CD's automatically play when inserted,
etc.)  For some reason, some CD-ROM drives act kind of funny when being
repeatedly accessed by magicdev, therefore the funny messages..
