malformed tarballs

Hi everyone,

What's the proper way to deal with a tarball that, when unzipped, messes
up the permissions of the directory where you're trying to untar it. I've
got a couple products I'm trying to install in my Zope site, but untarring
them really screws it up because the perms get changed.
