Tim,

	It sounds to me like someone did something deliberate.  Do you
notice anything odd in your logs?  If someone did a major hack job on it,
deleting /etc might have made sense.  Typically if someone does this,
they'll also wipe /var.  

	Either way, it will be necessary to reinstall the system.  If it was
broken into, that's really the only answer--if it was a disk error, it was a
pretty critical one and you'll want to at least re-create the filesystem.
