Re: [TCLUG:12912] SCSI advice



Western Digital went out of the business because they couldn't
compete, and they couldn't afford it.  They're already licensing
hard drive technology from IBM (at terms favorable to IBM, of course.)

It is possible to get good deals, though.  Me and my roommate both
picked up a 4.5GB IBM Ultra-2 SCSI-3 hard drive for $75 a piece at
the last Hamfest.  He had about 10 Ultra-2 drives, and a couple
Ultra-1 drives.

IIRC, my Adaptec 2930 was right around $100 at Best Buy.  It is has
internal and external narrow (8-bit) Ultra or Ultra-2 interfaces (I
can't remember which it was off the top of my head)

I really wish the drives were cheaper, though.  3 times as much for the
same amount of storage is just nuts!  Western Digital getting out of
that market (apparently 'Enterprise' == SCSI) isn't going to help
things..
