I tried to use Emacs...  That's when I started appreciating vi.  In any
case, there is a program that's used here at school called X-win32 that
runs on a windows box, and can be used as a remote x server.  By that, I
mean that you can run x applications from a unix/linux box on a win 95
display.  It might be worth checking out if you're forced to use win95
workstations with unix/linux servers.

In a class I took last semester, a lot of people had to learn motorola
68HC11 assembly and vi at the same time.  It was GOOD for them.  Don't
hesitate to curse your students with vi. ;)
