Thanks for the reply Troy (sorry if this gets sent out twice).

I am using RedHat 6.2. Unfortunately I don't know where to make the 
needed changes. Can you point me in the right direction?

I poked around in /etc/rc.d/ and never quite found what I was looking 
for. I saw something that called 'swapon -a' with some other switches 
in one of the scripts I was in. That then led me to /proc - but I 
never did find what I was looking for. I don't know enough out linux 
yet.
