I don't know if this is right, but from my memory of my install of SuSE 
6.3, runlevel 3 is actually start X on bootup, runlevel 2 is network 
services, 1 I don't remember, and S is for single-user mode.  Confused the 
heck out of me, as my limited knowledge suggested that runlevel 3 was 
network services, not X.  I don't know why SuSE did that.

I don't run X, so I can't tell you what you are looking for in the install. 
 I have an old machine and couldn't run the new installer YaST2, so I ran 
YaST.  YaST might be more detailed that YaST2, so if you still get stuck, 
you might have some luck digging around in there.
