problems with 1540 on a p3/600

I'm trying to get a Adaptec 1540 working on my VarStation P3-600, and
having nothing but troubles. When I try loading the driver (either as a
module or compiled into the kernel), I get the following logged:

Jun 1 18:53:17 jester kernel: Configuring Adaptec (SCSI-ID 7) at IO:330, IRQ 10, DMA priority 7
Jun 1 18:53:17 jester kernel: scsi0 : Adaptec 1542
Jun 1 18:53:17 jester kernel: scsi : 1 host.

Jun 1 18:53:23 jester kernel: aha1542.c: Trying device reset for target 0
Jun 1 18:53:33 jester kernel: aha1542.c: Unable to abort command for target 0
Jun 1 18:53:46 jester kernel: Sent BUS RESET to scsi host 0
Jun 1 18:54:06 jester kernel: aha1542.c: Unable to abort command for target 0
Jun 1 18:54:08 jester kernel: aha1542.c: Unable to abort command for target 0

Jun 1 18:54:18 jester kernel: aha1542.c: Unable to abort command for target 0
Jun 1 18:54:31 jester kernel: Sent BUS RESET to scsi host 0

..just keeps repeating itself for awhile. I know that the SCSI card and
the CDR I have connected to it are good, anyone have any ideas how I can
get it working? Or is there something about an old 1540 that just won't
work in a new P3-600?
