Thanks.  I overlooked the obvious.

The system I brought the archive over from had an ide subsystem and I thought I had enabled all the scsi stuff when I recompiled knowing I'd need it later, but forgot to actually drill down into the scsi driver section.

I didn't think of it since the lilo did find the boot block on sda and started the load.

The kernel is trying to mount your root filesystem from your first SCSI
hard drive.  If your hard drive is a SCSI drive, you probably forgot to
compile in the driver for the SCSI controller.  If you don't have SCSI
drives, then you have to fix your lilo.conf to point to /dev/hda1 or
whatever instead of /dev/sda1.
