Its been a while since I used VNC under Linux. What I remember is that you can specify the display on the server to use. So you could specify using :0. For example: myVNCserver:0 in the client. Also if you look at the options section you can select "Open shared session." This works for Windows clients as well.
As I say its been a while so things may have changed. I hope to get VNC back running on a couple of systems for "play" soon. :-)
