Not quite true...  isapnptools should be able to configure your modem for
you.  If you have it installed (if you have RedHat or Caldera you probably
do), just do 'pnpdump > pnptemp', edit pnptemp to reflect which settings
you want the card to have, then run 'isapnp pnptemp' to configure the
card(s).  (As root, of course.)  If you have RedHat or Caldera (maybe
Debian as well), move the pnptemp file to /etc/isapnp.conf, and it should
be used at bootup.  (isapnp is one of the first things run by Caldera and,
I presume, RedHat.  Just make sure that anything needing access to a PnP
card is loaded as a module *after* isapnp runs.)  It's really not very
hard to use isapnpconfig, and it can make changing (or checking) card
hardware settings simple.
