Linux 2.1.x framebuffer console..

I'm just curious to hear if anyone else has tried the framebuffer
console in Linux 2.1.x.. I managed to get my system to do it (Heh.. I
expected the boot logo to be bigger...), but only after using the nasty
hack of running UNIVBE before starting Linux with LOADLIN... (My video
card isn't Vesa 2.0 compliant...)

Anyway, I'm basically wondering if an actual Vesa 2.0 board has as low
of performance as my board does... I managed to find an XF68_FBDev
binary after looking for quite a while (and trying to compile it myself
a few times...)

Running X was painful.. Not only could I only run at 1024x768 (I
normally run 1152x864..), but the performance reminded me of my old
16-bit ISA video card...

Well, it ended up just being an academic exercise for me.. Does it work
better for anyone else?
