pgp 5 vs 2

I know we had some disscusion on the list concerning this but I've got a few 
questions. I've recently compiled Pgp5.0 and was looking at some of the pgp 
keys of list members, specifically David Carter (actually it was from the 
SIGFS list) and I saw that it was from pgp 2.6.2.  What I'm curious about is 
whether or not I would be able to use this key with pgp 5.0. If David were 
to send me a signed message would I, using pgp5.0 be able to decrypt it?
Presumably there is some backwards compatibility but I don't like to assume
things.
