I believe Linux does not come with crypt(1).  You should download the
PGP encrypted version (res-rsa-2.9.1.tar.gz.pgp) instead.  The same
decrypt key for the .crypt package is valid for the PGP package.  If
you do not have access to PGP, we can provide a decrypted archive via
email.

The RES-RSA package only contains the RSA encryption routines for the
client and server.  You will have to examine that package in conjunction
with the client and server source to get the full details on how the
authentication is done.  Documentation is sparse, but the method and
code are fairly easy to digest.
