We've found experimentally that this behaviour changes from release to
release - we make use of captive telnet sessions, and it's one of the
things we test on our staging POP before putting in production. :)
We find best performance with term serv/telnet mode=binary, and buffer
chars=no. Buffer chars=yes gets erratic performance, and to get a clean 8
bits you need the "binary" mode.
There are equivilents on the TNT - but they don't work well. Again, the
behaviour changes dramatically from release to release - as of p13, with
buffer chars=yes things barely work - with =no (surprisingly) things don't
go at all. :(
