RE: (ASCEND) One for the Gurus......
Sounds like it has nothing to do with the pipeline directly, but with a change in the news servers configuration.
When they added these two new servers, they may have changed something else on the servers like access lists. You really
need to be working with their support department on this?..
If the number your friend dials is the same as the number you dial, then you are probably both getting ips from the same pool
and maybe it is a pipeline issue. I doubt it.
If the number you friend dials is different than the number you dial, then you are probably getting ips from different pools. Maybe
the news server is setup to only serve news to the ips being served up by the machine your friend is dialing and not the machine
you are dialing into. We have a similar setup where we provide news service to dial-up analog home users but not to dedicated isdn business users?.the setup is controlled by the news server based on ip. You will need to work with your isp's support to resolve this.

Subject: (ASCEND) One for the Gurus......
Hi ascend users,
I'm having a problem with my pipeline 50 and ISP. First of all, my ISP
dynamically
assigns IP numbers, so I run NAT. Everything was working fine until a
couple of weeks
ago when news stopped working. What I found out was they added two
additional news machines all mapped to the name "news.ao.net". So if I
ping 3 consecutive times I get:
[david@localhost david]$ ping news.ao.net
PING news.ao.net (209.12.213.134): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 209.12.213.134: icmp_seq=0 ttl=252 time=45.9 ms
64 bytes from 209.12.213.134: icmp_seq=1 ttl=252 time=47.3 ms
--- news.ao.net ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 45.9/46.6/47.3 ms
[david@localhost david]$ ping news.ao.net
PING news.ao.net (205.244.242.28): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 205.244.242.28: icmp_seq=0 ttl=252 time=52.6 ms
64 bytes from 205.244.242.28: icmp_seq=1 ttl=252 time=47.0 ms
--- news.ao.net ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 47.0/49.8/52.6 ms
[david@localhost david]$ ping news.ao.net
PING news.ao.net (208.243.147.10): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 208.243.147.10: icmp_seq=0 ttl=252 time=46.3 ms
64 bytes from 208.243.147.10: icmp_seq=1 ttl=252 time=45.9 ms
64 bytes from 208.243.147.10: icmp_seq=2 ttl=252 time=47.8 ms
--- news.ao.net ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 45.9/46.6/47.8 ms
[david@localhost david]$
NOTICE how each successive ping returns a different IP number. The next
ping
would return to the first IP number and start all over.
I believe this is the event which broke news. I have a friend who uses
the same ISP.
He runs a linux box and connects via PPP over a modem. This hasn't
affected him
and he can still read news.
Any suggestions as what could be wrong?
Things I've tried.
o Upgrading my ascend software from: b.p50.Ai16 to b.p50_6.0.9.
o Reading news from every machine/OS on my network. All fail.
o Hard coding the IP number of each of the news machines in my news
readers. All fail.
o Telneting to the news machines at port 119. The telnet session hangs
after reporting
the escape character, see below:
[david@localhost david]$ telnet news.ao.net 119
Trying 209.12.213.134...
Connected to news.ao.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
<<< Hangs the telnet session here >>>
Thanks,
David
