(ASCEND) Radius Auth when telnetting to MAX

Hello,

We have a MAX 6000 that we're just setting up. At the moment it is on
our LAN only (no E1). I was hoping that I could get the radius side of
things working while we wait for our OnRamp30. I'm running cistron
radius on a linux box but the Max doesn't seem to want to talk to it.
I've set the appropriate Auth settings and here's what's happening:

1. When I telnet to the Max 6000 it won't authenticate me (I run
cistron with it's output going to stdout and the Max isn't sending any
requests to it).

2. Radius accounting seems to be working ok.

2. When I change some of the other settings in the Max 6000 I get some
weird stuff at the radius daemon. Here's an example:

radrecv: Request from host cb18c60c code=1, id=16, length=77
    User-Name = "appleroute-1"
    Password = "\234gUyfZ6\275&&E?\221C\364\327"
    NAS-IP-Address = 203.24.198.12
    NAS-Port-Id = 0
    NAS-Port-Type = 5
    Service-Type = Outbound-User
Sending Reject of id 16 to cb18c60c (nas MAX-1)
radrecv: Request from host cb18c60c code=1, id=17, length=79
    User-Name = "initial-banner"
    Password = "\234gUyfZ6\275&&E?\221C\364\327"
    NAS-IP-Address = 203.24.198.12
    NAS-Port-Id = 0
    NAS-Port-Type = 5
    Service-Type = Outbound-User
Sending Reject of id 17 to cb18c60c (nas MAX-1)

Can anyone shed any light on why I'm getting this weirdness?

Regards,

Gary.
