(ASCEND) 4048 and v.34 question

Hi,
I have a 4048 that was running with 56k modems.  I needed the 
modems for another box so now I have an empty 4048.  
I had 4 MX-SL-12MOD (v.34) cards just lying on the shelf so I 
thought I would set them up in the 4048 box to use that as a 
spare box.
Well, it tells me that all the slots are empty.  It doesn't see those
cards.  I am running 7.0.4 (ftik.m40).  Is there something I am missing
or do I need different software?  One of the items under System Options
says:  56K Slot Card Only Installed.  What does this mean?

Any help would be appreciated.
