Increasing open file descriptors

Wow! First time I have hit the limit of open file descriptors on a linux box.
My ftp server is getting pounded for Redhat 6.0.

Before I go kernel-parameter hunting, anyone know exactly where to increase
the number of open file descriptors in 2.0.35?
