Oracle 8i

I'm trying to install Oracle 8i.  After a week of work I finally got the 
damn thing downloaded from oracle's motherless son of a dog ftp site.  Now 
when I try to install it I get:

Initializing Java Virtual Machine from <blah blah>  Please wait...
Error in CreateOUIProcess(): -1
: Not a directory

Also the instructions tell me to "su root" before running the installer but 
when I try that it says the installation cannot run as root.

I know this is probably a longshot but I thought I'd see if anyone here has 
had similar problems before I make the attempt to get an answer from my 
Oracle contact.  Oh, one more thing.  The instructions say to install the 
jre version 1.1.6.  I read this wrong and installed 1.2.  I wonder if this 
could be a problem?
