I thought I read somewhere (kvoicecontrol help?) that some trickery is required
with an 8-bit soundcard. I don't have it in front of me and I (moan) don't have
ssh so there we are.

99 definitely doesn't sound right. Mine calibrated silence at 2 or 3. I slid
the mic level in the mixer up to just short of where it started buzzing loudly.
Not to be insulting, but is it plugged into the right jack? The back of my
machine is in a corner so I have a hard time reaching back there and getting
things where they are supposed to go sometimes. :)

Perhaps I'll update my experience with it later when I can sit down and use it
some more.

Cheers,
Joel
