Try this:
startx -- -bestRefresh

I've used that to get a XFree86-VGA16 server running on a laptop that
otherwise probably wouldn't have run X.  It sounded similar to your
experience.  I installed RedHat on it, then tried to run X, but the screen
would just go black.

Hey, what is the "Fold & Sneak" method?
